    Detection of a Third Planet in the HD 74156 System Using the Hobby-Eberly Telescope

    We report the discovery of a third planetary mass companion to the G0 star HD 74156. High precision radial velocity measurements made with the Hobby-Eberly Telescope aided the detection of this object. The best fit triple Keplerian model to all the available velocity data yields an orbital period of 347 days and minimum mass of 0.4 M_Jup for the new planet. We determine revised orbital periods of 51.7 and 2477 days, and minimum masses of 1.9 and 8.0 M_Jup respectively for the previously known planets. Preliminary calculations indicate that the derived orbits are stable, although all three planets have significant orbital eccentricities (e = 0.64, 0.43, and 0.25). With our detection, HD 74156 becomes the eighth normal star known to host three or more planets. Further study of this system's dynamical characteristics will likely give important insight to planet formation and evolutionary processes.Comment: 24 pages, 4 tables, 6 figures.     Problem: Hearing aids are posing difficulties for the elderly using them because of several factors. One of these factors is the filtering of background noise. Many affordable hearing aids on the market today do not produce quality sound because of inferior filtering of background noises. Opportunity: Our team didn’t understand why this is still a problem since we have the technology currently that is capable of solving this. For instance, we have microphones and speakers that filter out background noise by removing or lessening it. After some research we found that Google Glass is working on a prototype of something similar to this, using vibrations on the back of the ear to produce sounds for the user. However, this technology is only available as part of the Google Glass unit, which includes a personal computer, apps, etc. These extra features make Google Glass and their future prototype both expensive and imposing for the older generation. Therefore, making something simpler, cheaper, and user friendly would be desired

    Cash Balance Pension Plan Conversions: An Analysis Of Motivations And Pension Costs

    In recent years, many corporations have replaced their traditional defined benefit (DB) pension plans with cash balance (CB) plans, which share many of the characteristics of defined contribution plans. This study provides empirical evidence on the characteristics of CB converters and the behavior of pension costs and obligations pre- and post-conversion. We find that CB converters are larger than firms that retain traditional DB plans as well as those that terminate DB plans. They are less profitable than the former, but more profitable than the latter. CB conversions are not associated with proxies for greater labor mobility (e.g., firm-specific employee turnover rate). They are associated with a workforce that is closer to retirement, on average, lending credence to the breach of implicit contract rather than the labor market hypothesis as a motivator of CB conversions. Consistent with this intuition, we document that CB converters recognize a reduction of unrecognized prior service costs in the year of conversion, consistent with a negative plan amendment. Unlike pre-conversion, pension costs and obligations are significantly lower for CB firms post-conversion than for a matched sample of firms retaining traditional DB plans. CB conversions are more popular than DB plan terminations among firms with overfunded pension plans in periods when expected return on plan assets is likely to be high, with a consequent positive effect on reported income

    A Two-Headed Monster to Avert Disaster: HBS1/SKI7 Is Alternatively Spliced to Build Eukaryotic RNA Surveillance Complexes

    The cytosolic RNA exosome, a 3′→5′ exoribonuclease complex, contributes to mRNA degradation in eukaryotes, limiting the accumulation of poorly-translated, improperly translated, or aberrant mRNA species. Disruption of cytosolic RNA exosome activity allows aberrant RNA species to accumulate, which can then be detected by host antiviral immune systems as a signature of pathogen infection, activating antiviral defenses. SKI7 is a critical component of the cytosolic RNA exosome in yeast, bridging the catalytic exoribonuclease core with the SKI2/SKI3/SKI8 adaptor complex that guides aberrant RNA substrates into the exosome. The ortholog of SKI7 was only recently identified in humans as an alternative splice form of the HBS1 gene, which encodes a decoding factor translational GTPase that rescues stalled ribosomes. Here, we identify the plant orthologs of HBS1/SKI7. We found that HBS1 and SKI7 are typically encoded by alternative splice forms of a single locus, although some plant lineages have evolved subfunctionalized genes that apparently encode only HBS1 or only SKI7. In all plant lineages examined, the SKI7 gene is subject to regulation by alternative splicing that can yield unproductive transcripts, either by removing deeply conserved SKI7 coding sequences, or by introducing premature stop codons that render SKI7 susceptible to nonsense-mediated decay. Taking a comparative, evolutionary approach, we define crucial features of the SKI7 protein shared by all eukaryotes, and use these deeply conserved features to identify SKI7 proteins in invertebrate lineages. We conclude that SKI7 is a conserved cytosolic RNA exosome subunit across eukaryotic lineages, and that SKI7 is consistently regulated by alternative splicing, suggesting broad coordination of nuclear and cytosolic RNA metabolism

    Analytical Study of the Organisational Culture- Related Practices in Colleges of Education in Western and Central Regions of Ghana

    This study was undertaken to ascertain the organisational culture related practices in Colleges of Education in the Central and Western Regions of Ghana. The conduct of the research was guided by two research questions. The main research instrument used was a questionnaire. Both open-ended and close-ended questions were used. The statistical tools used for the analysis were Frequency, Percentage distributions, Mean and Standard deviations and ANOVA.The study revealed that in spite of the elevation of the Colleges of Education to the tertiary level, most of the practices of the colleges are still based on second cycle organisational culture. The elevation of the Colleges of Education to the tertiary status has imposed challenges on discipline as teacher trainees perceive the rules and regulations of the Colleges as being too strict. Recommendations made include: Measures should be put in place by College authorities to create democratic, open and transparent administration to ensure that both students and tutors operate without fear of being maligned or discriminated against in the performance of their duties. College principals are enjoined to put in place pragmatic measures to facilitate governance of the colleges as tertiary institutions and to ensure that second cycle cultural practices are eschewed.
